About

Tomeopathy

Tomeopathy loves books more than, not life itself, obviously, but definitely more than life without books. That kind of existence wouldn’t do at all, Tomeopathy has no time for book burners or censorship. At this point it should be made clear that Tomeopathy does not, in fact, love all books in a blind, unconditional way. Tomeopathy has standards, and books that come into Tomeopathy’s possession must live up to those standards in order to become loved and cherished.

Tomeopathy’s opinion cannot be bought and will never be sold, any opinion given, is given on the basis of Tomeopathy’s own enjoyment or (where clearly stated) on the basis of contributors opinions and is not influenced by commercial interest. Although, in the spirit of openness, it should be made clear that there is a commercial interest in readers enjoying the website and using the links provided to purchase any recommended books. In a commercial sense Tomeopathy is equally happy for readers to purchase books it has castigated, don’t say it didn’t warn you though (see full disclosure).

Tomeopathy’s aim is to inform and entertain, to offer an opinion on the hard work of others and to empower readers of the website to enjoy new books and authors they may otherwise not have discovered. Tomeopathy may from time to time exhibit a soft spot for certain books and characters that are not particularly deserving, possibly due to the effects of personal history and circumstances, or sepia tinged memories of an idyllic childhood spent worming through books. Tomeopathy may also pay undue regard to certain authors, in the hope that more recent offerings will somehow rekindle former glories or in the expectation of an upward trajectory, Tomeopathy sometimes lives in hope.

Tomeopathy reads fiction (apologies to lovers of non-fiction, I regretfully suggest that you seek another website) and has a non-exclusive tendency towards fantasy, sci-fi and detective/mystery/thriller novels. Tomepathy particularly enjoys a good series, because Tomeopathy likes good things to last, not too long though. Tomeopathy does not enjoy the transition from character to caricature (see most US television series longer than five seasons in length), and for that reason prefers series with an end, or at least, a scheduled end in the near future. Tomeopathy is also not a patient reader, it does not enjoy waiting to read books which are released less frequently than Guns N’ Roses albums (particularly if there is a danger that the author may not live to finish the series), it likes to know when it picks up a book that if it so chooses it can read the full story from start to finish (for that reason there may be some surprising omissions in the review sections, they may stay that way until the whole series is available or Tomeopathy may relent under external pressure).

You may well disagree with the objects of Tomeopathy’s affection. You may feel that Tomeopathy has offhandedly dismissed the magnum opus of your favoured scribe in short order. In this instance Tomeopathy is willing to accept that its opinion is not fact, Tomeopathy reserves the right to change its mind and welcomes lively discourse with this objective in the comments section. Tomeopathy would though ask you to respect others (particularly Tomeopathy) and refrain from insulting language and personal remarks.

Full disclosure

Tomeopathy holds down a full time job, has children and does not possess a time machine or the ability to read five books synchronously, sadly, it cannot read everything. It will therefore include books it has not read in certain sections of the website, with the intention of better illustrating the breadth of literature available. Where this is the case it will be made clear that Tomeopathy is passing on the opinions of other readers, rather than making a self-informed recommendation.

Tomeopathy is an independent website, it is not paid directly to provide reviews or recommend certain products and would never recommend an undeserving product for financial gain. Tomeopathy maintains this website because it loves books, it wants to share that love with others and foster a community of likeminded individuals, Tomeopathy hopes that these motives will be apparent to anyone reading the website.

Tomeopathy does have overheads though, website hosting and the domain name are subject to an annual subscription and it needs to purchase books before it can review them. In the fullness of time, Tomeopathy would also like to dedicate more time to reading books, reviewing books and updating this website. Tomeopathy would prefer to keep the website advert light or better yet free. Adverts are annoying, especially the ones which appear where the link you actually wanted was a few microseconds earlier, webpages take longer to load and some are completely irrelevant to most people (who cares how some dude in your local area got rich quick, beat erectile dysfunction with one simple trick, or cured tinnitus using only natural ingredients), this is where you can help.

If you enjoy the website, Tomeopathy provides links to online sellers alongside each book, if you follow those links when you choose to buy the products Tomeopathy receives a small commission from the seller, the product does not cost any more than if you searched for it independently and your purchases help to support this website. Supporting the website in this way will create a virtuous circle, Tomeopathy will be able to dedicate additional time to improving the website and reviewing more books, which results in more recommendations, more reading material for you to read and a nicer experience when browsing Tomeopathy.

Tomeopathy only includes links to online sellers it has used itself and would recommend to others, and it only recommends books it has either read and genuinely enjoyed or those which have been recommended by trusted sources (i.e. you the readers). Tomeopathy believes that any attempt to do otherwise for commercial gain would result in disaffected readers, erosion of trust and curtailment of interest in Tomeopathy, Tomeopathy does not want that.
